The German Network for Bioinformatics Intrastructure (de.NBI) presents the first Summer School on Cloud Computing for Bioinformatics that is organized by the Bielefeld-Gießen (BiGi) Center for Microbial Bioinformatics. The BiGi center is specialized in the field of Omics data analysis for microbes and is well-known for its software platforms (e.g. GenDB, EDGAR). Furthermore, the de.NBI centres in Bochum, Freiburg, Heidelberg and Tübingen are involved in the organization of this workshop. This de.NBI Summer School will focus on the utilisation of Cloud Computing infrastructures for bioinformatics. During the training, participants will gain insight into state-of-the-art Cloud Computing technologies and learn how to efficiently utilize Cloud Computing resources to develop and deploy scalable bioinformatics tools. Participants of the workshop could bring their own tools, which will then be used in a Cloud Computing environment.

- Sunday: Arrival
- Monday: General introduction & basics (cloud resources, servers, storage, network, etc.)
- Tuesday: Advanced topics
- Wednesday: Scalable Cloud Computing Frameworks (Hadoop, Spark, etc.)
- Thursday: Docker & other container solutions, Galaxy in the Cloud
- Friday: Orchestration of Cloud services — Farewell Dinner
- Saturday: Departure

Learning goals:
Participants will be instructed in the usage of OpenStack based Cloud Computing environments and gain understanding of the possibilities and limitations of Cloud Computing resources for bioinformatics software development and data analysis. The course covers lectures and hands-on sessions by de.NBI speakers and renowned experts in the field.

The summer school aims at PhD students, postdoctoral fellows or other scientists with a solid background in bioinformatics and software development. We also expect that participants are familiar with UNIX/Linux systems and have a basic understanding of storage and computing devices. During the practical sessions we will also consider the individual demands of participants if possible.
