The German BioHackathon provides a unique opportunity to bring together developers, trainers, trainees, and training coordinators in an environment perfect for testing, gathering and implementing feedback.
Proposed Activities
Throughout the week we will combine user testing with the development of a few additional features that will help LEA's adoption. This year's focus is on user experience and access/authentication. The main activities are:
- Organising a community test run of LEA during the BioHackathon, allowing participants to experience the platform from the perspectives of trainers and trainees.
- Collecting structured feedback on usability and design for the core workflows (participant registration, course administration, and communication) to identify points for improvement.
- Complete the integration with Life Science AAI (LS Login), including authentication and organisation-based authorisation, enabling seamless access for the wider ELIXIR community.
- Prioritise improvements into short-term and long-term development goals, addressing those possible during the hackathon.
Relevance within de.NBI & ELIXIR Germany
LEA supports the training and capacity-building missions of de.NBI and ELIXIR Germany by providing an open, community-driven platform for managing training events more efficiently. By integrating LS AAI we further strengthen the connection to the ELIXIR community. This represents an important milestone towards full integration of LEA with other training systems, such as TeSS and Training Metrics Database (TMD), creating an open-source ecosystem of training infrastructure. The planned community testing during the BioHackathon will ensure that LEA continues to evolve in response to the needs of the trainers and trainees using it, in particular those of de.NBI and ELIXIR training communities. As an open-source project, all code development is openly available to the wider community, encouraging collaboration and transparency, and supporting long-term sustainability of the platform.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the BioHackathon we expect to have:
- validated LEA's core user journeys through structured testing with BioHackathon participants;
- identified and prioritised usability improvements based on community feedback;
- completed LS AAI integration with organisation-based authorisation;
- prepared a public roadmap towards LEA's first stable release.
Participants will not only evaluate LEA but also help shape its future development by contributing requirements, identifying missing workflows, and prioritising improvements that reflect the needs of the broader training community.
Who are we looking for?
We welcome anyone interested in improving the way training events are organised and managed to join our project. We are particularly looking for:
- * Developers with experience in Django, REST APIs, front-end or back-end development.
- * Training coordinators and trainers who are willing to test LEA using realistic scenarios and share their experiences to help us identify future development goals.
We also welcome anyone interested in discussing use cases and requirements come talk to us. This input will be precious to help us better understand how LEA can support your training activities.
