For a distributed research infrastructure like de.NBI (ELIXIR-DE), effective service portfolio management is the backbone of strategic operation. Ensuring that life science resources are discoverable, measurable, and of high-quality requires a synchronized ecosystem where administrative oversight meets technical performance tracking. As the network grows, the ability to provide transparent reporting to stakeholders while reducing the manual burden on service providers becomes paramount for long-term sustainability.
Over the past decade, several specialized platforms have emerged within the network to address specific management needs. OSIRIS serves as the central hub for network information and activity tracking, Scorpion focuses on technical KPI monitoring and aggregation, and the Service Registration Platform acts as the single source of truth for service metadata. However, these systems currently operate as functional silos. This fragmentation hinders the efficient flow of information, leading to redundant data entry for researchers and potentially inconsistent reporting across different administrative layers.
This Biohackathon project aims to bridge these gaps by defining and implementing robust technical integrations between OSIRIS, Scorpion, and the Service Registration Platform. A clear process model will be established, outlining the information flow and the triggers of automated transfers such as a new publication or a KPI submission deadline. Furthermore, this information flow will be documented and communicated to the network to ensure a shared understanding of responsibilities, data ownership, synchronization events, and integration points across all participating platforms.
The technical work will focus on four primary integration tracks:
- Implementing automated imports of service metadata from the Service Registration Platform into OSIRIS and Scorpion to ensure a single source of truth
- Developing API-based connectors to display technical metrics from Scorpion directly within the OSIRIS interface
- Automating the import of service-related publications from OSIRIS into Scorpion to correlate scientific impact with technical usage
- Streamlining the submission process for Service Providers (e.g., IPK’s e!DAL-PGP and DSMZ-Services such as BRENDA and BacDive) to Scorpion, reducing manual reporting overhead through standardized interfaces
Throughout the implementation we will document reusable integration patterns, identifier mappings, and recommendations that can serve as a blueprint for other de.NBI (ELIXIR-DE) services.
