The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
A position as system administrator / cloud specialist for the recently launched infrastructure initiative German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA, http://www.ghga.de) is available at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). Together with 16 scientific partners, the DKFZ is currently setting up the German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA, http://www.ghga.de), which is part of the national program for research data infrastructures (NFDI, https://www.nfdi.de/). A core mission of GHGA is to implement and operate a national node of the federated architecture of the European Genome-Phenome Archive (EGA, https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ega). Local PIs in the network include Ivo Buchhalter, Daniel Hübschmann, Martin Lablans, Peter Lichter & Oliver Stegle.
In order to develop the GHGA software platform into a state-of-the-art infrastructure for secure exchange of genome data we are looking for a system administrator / cloud specialist.
Job description:
We are looking for a team member with substantial experience and/or interest in developing, deploying, and maintaining a high-performance cloud computing platform. She/he should have a background in computer science, physics, bioinformatics or computational biology or related to develop, construct and administer the infrastructure for GHGA software (front- and back-end) and software development (DevOps) in a private cloud environment. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research and data management team implementing, developing and maintaining a diverse range of state-of-the-art tools and infrastructure to manage human omics data. This will be done in close cooperation with the participating GHGA institutions and other (inter)national partners (c.f. http://www.ghga.de).
Your responsibilities:
- Developing, deploying, monitoring and maintaining cloud services (such as DevOps services)
- Supporting software developers and users to deploy software and analyse data in a cloud
- Creating easily deployable virtual infrastructures that can be shared with other host institutions
- Implementing system security measures and performing penetration testing
- Development of cloud infrastructure concepts
- Designing and implementing system health monitoring strategies
- Ensuring availability and functionality of cloud-based computing resources
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or similar technical background
- Experience in systems administration / cloud computing is expected
- Previous experience in OpenStack and Kubernetes is beneficial
- Proficiency in Unix-based systems and relevant programming languages such as Python is expected
- Interest in setting up and using DevOps pipelines is beneficial
- Previous experience of infrastructure in a life science and genomics context is beneficial
The ideal applicant should have demonstrated the ability to work independently and creatively. The candidate should have excellent communications skills and be able to articulate clearly the technical needs, set clear goals and work within an interdisciplinary setting.

Duration: The position is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of prolongation.
