The Bork and Zeller groups are seeking a bioinformatics engineer to provide technical support to the bioinformatics community at both at the institute and on the national level, via the groups' membership of the Heidelberg Node for Human Bioinformatics (HD-HuB) in the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI).
Your role
In this role you will work closely with researchers to maintain and develop bioinformatic tools and combine them into advanced workflows. You will be responsible for ensuring these are portable to a variety of compute environments, such as the de.NBI Cloud. Your responsibilities will also include maintenance and monitoring of various web resources provided to the research community by HD-HuB/de.NBI.
As a core position in EMBL's Bio-IT Community, the role will provide you with the opportunity to contribute to efforts towards common infrastructure for sharing of (meta)data between groups and projects, and to help in the development and delivery of training in both fundamental skills for scientific computing (e.g. Software/Data/Library Carpentry workshops) and on specialised topics (e.g. use of cloud resources; application of HD-HuB tools).
You have
• Substantial experience of working at the interface between biology and computation
• Desire to work closely with researchers to help them attain the goals of their projects
• Good knowledge of one or more programming/scripting languages e.g. Python, R
• Experience working in a distributed compute environment (HPC cluster or cloud)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of a range of bioinformatics tools to provide support and training
You might also have
• PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related fields, or equivalent experience
• Knowledge of tools to manage research analysis pipelines e.g. Common Workflow Language, NextFlow, Snakemake
