Kiel University has successfully applied for funding through the federal / state programme in support of early career researchers, and seeks to appoint more qualified women to professorships.

The Faculty of Medicine at Kiel University is looking to appoint a

W2 Professor for a limited period (6 years) with Tenure Track for Medical Bioinformatics

The future occupant of this position is expected to represent the subject area of Medical Bioinformatics in research and teaching.

We are looking for an excellent scientist with outstanding qualifications in Bioinformatics, with a special focus on the medical field.

The candidate must have extensive knowledge of the analysis of omics data (next-generation sequencing data in particular) as well as the management and integration of high-dimensional molecular and clinical data sets. The candidate is expected to present Bioinformatics courses in relevant Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes at the faculty.

The professorship is jointly based at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB) at the CAU’s Faculty of Medicine (http://www.medizin.uni-kiel.de) and another clinical institution at the UKSH, Campus Kiel. It is closely connected with the Centre for Molecular Biosciences (ZMB; http://www.zmb.uni-kiel.de/) and the DFG-funded “Centre for Comprehensive Genome Analysis” (CCGA; https://www.ccga.uni-kiel.de), which work in close cooperation with the two local Clusters of Excellence “Precision Medicine in Inflammation” (PMI, https://precisionmedicine.de) and ROOTS (http://www.cluster-roots.uni-kiel.de). The professor should establish and lead a working group for Bioinformatics, which should contribute to the analysis and management of omics data in large research initiatives.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the following achievements and abilities: high-ranking publications in the areas of Bioinformatics (with a focus on medicine) as well as data management and integration, success in acquiring external funding, integrative management skills, teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level. Own research focus areas relevant to PMI and ROOTS are essential. Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: “single-cell” analytics/metagenomic data analysis; machine learning/artificial intelligence.

Appointment to the professorship is subject to eligibility for the WISNA funding programme. The target group of the programme is scientists at an early career stage. We would therefore in particular like to explicitly invite scientists to apply who have only carried out scientific activities for a short period after completion of their doctoral degrees.

Please also refer to the appointment requirements in Section 61 of the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act. After a successful evaluation, and in the presence of further requirements in accordance with Section 62 of the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act (HSG), the professorship will become permanent. To do so, Kiel University will carry out a corresponding evaluation procedure in accordance with the valid regulations, usually one year before the temporary professorship position expires.
