The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

As part of the National Genome Medicine Initiative genomDE, the German Ministry of Health has recently launched a pilot project to establish the technical, legal and scientific concept for the future of genome medicine in Germany. In the context of this initiative, DKFZ, together with leading biomedical partners across Germany, seeks to develop technical solutions for genomDE and implement infrastructure elements as technology pilots. genomDE aims to establish a framework for the inclusion and medical interpretation of quality-controlled genome sequencing data in routine diagnostics, to advance treatment options in cancer and rare genetic diseases. It is also envisioned that the data generated will be made available for research in a secure cloud environment, thereby enabling secondary use while ensuring highest standards of data protection for the sensitive genomic data. The technical development of these solutions will be closely connected to and coordinated with the ongoing development of the German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA), a national research infrastructure for genome data (NFDI) coordinated at DKFZ. In addition, it will be involved in the Pan-European “Beyond 1 Million Genomes” (B1MG) initiative which recently was selected for funding to build up a European “Genomics Data Infrastructure (GDI)".

At the national level, the activities are embedded in leading clinical networks such as e.g. the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), the Centers for Personalized Medicine (ZPM) as well as the Medical Informatics Initiative. The project will also be closely connected to and interact with other international initiatives and networks such as, the European Genome-Phenome Archive (EGA) and the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH). The position will be situated between the GHGA main office at DKFZ and the research group of Prof. Oliver Stegle (Division of Computational Genomics and Systems Genetics) and it will involve close interactions with Prof. Stefan Fröhling and his team at the NCT.

Job description:

For the development of the genomDE and B1MG / GDI data infrastructure architecture, as well as for ensuring connectivity with GHGA and other international initiatives, we are looking to appoint an experienced computer scientist or bioinformatician. Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to build an interdisciplinary team to foster the conceptual and technical alignment between GHGA and other technical infrastructures and parties involved in genomDE and B1MG. The coordinator will take responsibility for the development of novel technical concepts and coordinate the software development with special emphasis on the IT security aspects to be covered.

Your tasks:

- Development and shaping of technical concepts for innovative data infrastructures relevant for biomedical research and healthcare
- Coordination of the interaction of technical working groups within genomDE, B1MG and GHGA
- Coordination and adjustment of technical concepts between all involved parties
- Coordination of the development of pilots for the connection between B1MG / GDI, genomDE and the GHGA core software architecture
- Contribute to the development (back-end / front-end) of pilot software
- Contribute to the development of IT security concepts for GHGA and genomDE for the secure operations of IT infrastructures for genomics data
- Participation in international development networks of the federated EGA architecture and the upcoming B1MG / Genome Data Infrastructure (GDI) projects
- Collaboration with local and international developers

We offer you a senior position at the interface between leading initiatives in biomedical data science with a significant degree of independence and a strong perspective for a successful future career path.

Your possibilities:

- Be involved in the shaping of innovative, cross-border, IT infrastructures enabling innovative personal medicine approaches in Germany
