eggNOG is a database of hierarchically organized orthologous gene groups with functional and evolutionary annotations. It provides orthology predictions across thousands of bacterial, archaeal, eukaryotic, and viral genomes, together with multiple sequence alignments, phylogenetic trees, and annotations from established functional resources.
Key features:
- Orthology-based annotation: functional predictions grounded in evolutionary relationships rather than general sequence similarity
- Broad taxonomic coverage: orthologous gene groups across thousands of levels for bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses
- Rich functional links: Gene Ontology, KEGG, UniProtKB, Pfam, CAZy, and CARD
- Flexible access: web interface for interactive exploration and bulk data downloads
- Part of the Bork Microbiome Toolbox
- Free for academic life scientists
