BioHackathon Germany is an annual event that brings together life scientists, bioinformaticians and data managers / data stewards from Germany and around the world. Organised by de.NBI & ELIXIR-DE, it offers an intense week of hacking with over 150 participants (on-site and online) working on diverse and exciting projects. The aim is to produce results that address challenges in bioinformatics and life science research. Scientists from companies are also encouraged to participate and submit project proposals connecting their work to open science activities and initiatives.

This year, we are holding the BioHackathon Germany from 01-05 December 2025 at the Anders Hotel in Walsrode, with remote access available for those unable to attend in person.
However, for the best BioHackathon experience, we recommend on-site participation whenever possible.

Places for in-person participation are limited, registrations will therefore be handled mainly on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for BioHackathon Germany 2025 will open in September.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at the BioHackathon Germany 2025!

Scope

BioHackathon Germany's activities are driven by dynamic sessions, where life scientists, bioinformaticians and data managers / data stewards meet, discuss and implement ideas and projects during intensive and productive hacking sessions. To be selected, projects need to demonstrate alignment with the research, infrastructure, training or RDM topics offered by de.NBI & ELIXIR Germany and its service centres.

Goals

  • Promote the development of an open source data integration infrastructure that will accelerate scientific innovation. This includes areas such as FAIR, identifiers, metadata standards, ontologies and metadata catalogues.
  • Engage technical people from the bioinformatics community within and beyond de.NBI / ELIXIR-DE to collaborate on topics of common interest aligned with de.NBI / ELIXIR-DE activities.
  • Strengthen and enable interactions and collaborations with ELIXIR, NFDI and other bioinformatics related projects through joint activities.
  • Provide networking opportunities for all participating attendees

Project Application

We are now opening project submissions for 2025!

  • Each project should have at least two project leaders, who will design and submit the project.
  • At least one project leader and four project members (co-leaders if possible) should attend the event in person. Otherwise, the accepted project will be run as an online project.

General Guidelines and Instructions

Submit your project proposal by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ahead of the deadline of 15 July 2025. The proposal should not be longer than 500 words and should include the project's leads / contact persons, a project draft that clearly defines the problems and challenges that the project tries to address, and how they align with topics and activities of de.NBI & ELIXIR Germany and our service centres. A continuation of the work done during the ELIXIR BioHackathon may be considered for the BioHackathon Germany; however, the proposal must clearly define a different focus than that of the previous project accepted for the BioHackathon Europe. It is essential that the new direction is well-articulated.

After the deadline, the BioHackathon Germany Programme Committee will review all submissions based on project scope, actuality, connections to de.NBI & ELIXIR Germany topics and activities, and content-related connection to the Biohackathon Europe by ELIXIR Europe. We aim to inform all co-leads of the status of their project submission until 18 July 2025. In the case of similar submissions, we may suggest that your project be merged with another.

Please be aware that those who register as face-to-face participants should stay at the venue for the full duration of the event. This is to optimize the value of on-site interaction and collaboration.

More information will be published closer to the event.
