Day 1 of the EuBIC-MS Winter School 2026 opens with an accessible introduction to computational mass spectrometry, combining a concise conceptual overview with an interactive, hands-on pyOpenMS session. Participants will get an intuition for how MS data can be explored, processed, and automated using open tools, and how this connects to common analysis workflows covered throughout the week.
Participants will:
- Get a high-level overview of computational MS concepts and typical workflow building blocks
- Learn what the OpenMS ecosystem is and how pyOpenMS enables scripting and customization
- Work through an interactive hands-on session to explore MS data and fundamental processing steps
Prerequisites:
No programming experience required. Basic familiarity with mass spectrometry concepts is helpful but not necessary. Bring a laptop.
Learning goals:
- Understand the fundamentals of “computational MS”
- Get hands-on exposure to pyOpenMS; visually explore and process data
Keywords:
Computational mass spectrometry, OpenMS, pyOpenMS, hands-on training, reproducible workflows, automation
Tools:
OpenMS, pyOpenMS
Audience:
Students and researchers new to computational MS, and anyone who wants a practical starting point for MS data analysis with open-source tools.
